Council has a responsibility to work effectively with Māori. It is important to acknowledge the mana of tangata whenua and to take that into account in our policy direction, as well as our operations and service delivery. Hastings District Council is seeking two outstanding individuals to be a part of Council’s drive to achieve this. Personal qualities of professionalism, and integrity with a public service orientation are required.

In the Principal Advisor role, you will ensure that strategic relationships between Council and tangata whenua are identified, maintained, supported and developed in a way that will give substance to the responsiveness framework. You will work with the leadership of key partners and provide advice and support to the Chief Executive, staff, and where appropriate to the Mayor and Council.

Effectiveness within the role will be largely determined by the ability of the position holder to engage with and influence the approach and understanding of managers and staff who are responsible for planning and the delivery services.

You will be culturally competent in all aspects of the general community and Maori tikanga in particular. A relevant degree in Social Policy, Social Science or other relevant discipline is necessary.

In the Advisor role, you will assist the Principal Advisor in positive strategic relationship development with key partners. Relationship engagement with partners and the provision of advice and development opportunities essential components of this role.

The position requires the person holding it to be able to the whanaungatanga of mana whenua in a way that builds the fabric of advice and support for the Principal Advisor and the leadership of Council. Effectiveness in this role will positively reinforce the approach and understanding of managers and staff planning and delivering services to the community.
